I had thoughts of pulling this blog off the internet. I think the uncertainty of a Trump presidency caused me to jump to conclusions. I heard what he said about a number of issues during the campaign, heard the stories about Russian connections and possibly a Manchurian Candidate situation, saw how Comey effected the results, and I filled in the gaps/jumped to conclusions with worse case scenario logic. Now, I’m not saying we should stop using our civil right to protest, but I am thinking we should give him a chance.
He has to be a rational person. He hasn’t lost his fortune yet, so that’s one indication that we can trust him. Another is that he is concerned with ego. I think he wants the American people to approve of him. In order to keep approval he’ll have to do positive things for the country – or at least he can’t fuck it up too bad.
Now, if he starts firing Generals like Erdogan did in Turkey to weaken the military we should take to the streets. If he starts putting journalists in jail we should take to the streets. If he starts rounding up Americans with shaky reasoning we should take to the streets. If he tries to make schools worse, mess with voter rights, or discriminate against minorities we should take to the streets. But, so long as he’s working in our interests, respecting the constitution, and not breaking laws we should give him a chance for four years and then make our voices heard through voting. I’m thinking he’ll turn out to be like recent past conservatives, and we can reverse his actions in a few years. -Carl Miller
